The Legend of Frankie Silver
By Howard Williams

The drama, The Legend of Frankie Silver, is a full length extravaganza with an exciting mixture of love, marriage, death, suspicion, escape, and hanging. There is mystery in the Frankie Silver tale. Was this justice? Was Frankie Silver abused? Did she kill in self-defense or out of malice? Was she justly tried? (She could not by law testify on her own behalf) Why did she go silently to the gallows? The author, Howard Williams, utilized court records, legends, interviews with descendants and others, newspaper articles, and books to create this suspenseful work of art. The premier performance took place at Brewton-Parker College in Georgia, where the playwright taught drama. It played to standing room only crowds for three nights.  In 2005 it had an audience of almost 3,000 people at the CoMMA in Morganton, NC.  It will play again at the CoMMA on October 9, 10, and 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM.  Call (828)SHOW for ticket information.

It is appropriate that The Legend of Frankie Silver is presented in Morganton or Burke County, North Carolina, because that is where Frankie was incarcerated, tried, convicted and hanged. The site of the murder, now Mitchell County, was part of Burke County at the time of the incident.
